Evergreen orders 23 container ships in $1.47bn newbuilding programme

Evergreen Marine has confirmed a major newbuilding programme covering 23 container ships, with a total value of up to $1.47 billion, reinforcing its long-term fleet expansion and renewal strategy. The development was first reported by The Maritime Telegraph , citing official stock exchange disclosures.
The Taiwanese carrier will execute the contracts through its subsidiary Evergreen Marine Asia, with construction split between two Chinese yards: CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding and Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding, part of the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group.
The order is divided into two vessel types. Evergreen has contracted 16 feeder container ships of around 3,100 TEU at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong. In parallel, seven post-Panamax vessels with capacities of approximately 5,900 TEU will be built at Jiangsu New Yangzi.
Financial disclosures show that the 5,900 TEU vessels are priced between $67 million and $82 million per unit, placing the seven-ship package at $469–574 million. The 3,100 TEU feeders carry price tags of $46–56 million each, bringing that segment to roughly $736–896 million.
Evergreen has not announced delivery timelines. Industry analysts note that container ships of this size typically enter service several years after contract signing, once hull construction and outfitting are completed.
The latest contracts add to Evergreen’s multi-year tonnage growth programme. In late 2025, the carrier outlined plans to spread large newbuilding orders between Chinese and South Korean shipyards, including dual-fuel LNG-ready 14,000 TEU vessels valued at about $2.8 billion, with deliveries expected between 2028 and 2030. Earlier campaigns also covered 11 ultra-large 24,000 TEU container ships, aimed at boosting capacity on key global trades.
