HMM has signed a landmark agreement with Avikus, the autonomous navigation arm of HD Hyundai, in what Maritime Executive describes as the largest single supply contract for commercial autonomous navigation systems. The deal marks a decisive step in moving AI-driven ship navigation from pilot projects to large-scale fleet deployment, strengthening HMM’s digital and operational strategy.

Under the agreement, HMM will equip 40 vessels with Avikus’ second-generation autonomous navigation technology. The partners also confirmed a broader framework for joint research and technical cooperation involving HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, aimed at accelerating further development and refinement of autonomous navigation solutions.

Avikus says the contract allows it to exceed the milestone of 100 systems supplied for large commercial ships, making it the first company in the sector to reach this scale. Most installations so far rely on retrofits, though the company expects wider integration into newbuild vessels as adoption grows, according to industry reporting by Lloyd’s List .

Unlike conventional decision-support tools, Avikus’ platform operates at Level 2 autonomy. The AI system does more than assist officers: it can plan optimal routes, control navigation without direct crew input, and continuously adjust speed to reduce fuel consumption and improve efficiency. Real-time situational awareness remains a core feature, supporting safer operations in complex traffic and weather conditions.

Industry analysts note that autonomous navigation also addresses persistent challenges such as crew shortages and fatigue, which continue to affect safety and performance at sea. As reported by Splash247 , multiple vessels are already in advanced trial phases, with the technology moving steadily toward class society approval.

While technical progress is rapid, regulatory alignment remains critical. The shipping sector now looks to class societies and the IMO to establish a clear global framework that enables the safe integration of autonomous navigation across all shipping segments.
