AI technology helps detect containers lost at sea

Eyesea and EVI Safety Technologies have introduced an AI-based system designed to detect and report containers lost overboard, using standard onboard ship cameras. After successful simulation tests, the technology is now ready for trials on operating vessels.
The system relies on computer vision and machine learning, continuously monitoring deck and bridge cameras to identify containers falling into the sea or drifting nearby. Once detected, it automatically issues alerts containing key details such as position, number of containers involved, and cargo information. Notifications can be shared with shipowners, flag administrations and coastal authorities.
The solution supports compliance with new IMO reporting requirements, which call for immediate notification of container losses, particularly when hazardous cargo is involved. By providing geo-tagged images and structured data, the system speeds up reporting and improves accuracy.
EVI Safety Technologies CEO Vladimir Ponomarfev said the use of AI offers a practical way to address a long-standing safety and environmental challenge in shipping.
Real-time detection also tackles a major industry problem: many container losses are discovered too late or not reported at all. Faster awareness allows crews to respond promptly and reduce risks. Recent incidents highlight that container losses remain a persistent issue, underlining the need for improved monitoring tools.
