Storm Emilia batters Gibraltar ferry, leaving dozens of vehicles damaged

A ferry journey across the Strait of Gibraltar ended abruptly after Storm Emilia whipped up violent seas that left vehicles damaged onboard. Battling gale-force winds and steep swells, the ro ro ferry Ciudad de Mahon departed Algeciras late Saturday night for Ceuta, only to find conditions deteriorating far beyond expectations.
Shortly after leaving port, the vessel was struck by a powerful wave that sent her rolling heavily, briefly lifting the propellers clear of the water. With the ship struggling to maintain stability, the master made the decision to abandon the crossing and return to Algeciras.
Inside the vehicle deck, the sudden motion unleashed chaos. Cars broke free from their restraints and slammed into one another, leaving dozens with dented panels and twisted bodywork. Passengers described a tense and unsettling scene, though no injuries were reported.
The ferry later waited close to two hours for an available berth after returning to port, with food provided to those onboard. The aborted voyage, including the return leg, lasted around five hours in total. Footage recorded by passengers later surfaced online, showing vehicles wedged together at odd angles, bearing clear signs of storm damage.
Despite being selected for the route due to her larger size and perceived ability to cope with heavy weather, Ciudad de Mahon was unable to continue safely. Operator Balearia later acknowledged that sea conditions near Ceuta were significantly harsher than forecast, preventing a stable approach to the port. Compensation has been offered to affected passengers.
