A towering blaze ripped through a warehouse complex at the Port of Hamburg late Monday, casting heavy smoke over Germany’s busiest seaport and forcing emergency crews into a fierce overnight battle.

More than 100 firefighters, backed by dozens of engines and specialized vehicles, were dispatched after alarms were raised in the Waltershof district near the container terminals. By Tuesday morning, much of the warehouse had been reduced to charred ruins.

Authorities urged residents nearby to keep windows shut as smoke blanketed surrounding neighborhoods. Port activity at adjacent berths was temporarily restricted to give way to emergency access and protect crews from the thick haze.

The fire, which began in a parked vehicle inside the facility, quickly spread to the hall where multiple pressurized gas cylinders were stored. Explosions thundered through the night, scattering burning debris and sparking secondary fires across neighboring sites. The violent blasts forced firefighters to withdraw to a safer distance as armored water cannons and high-capacity airport fire engines were brought in to tame the flames.

At least five people were injured in the disaster, including one in critical condition and another with serious injuries. Twenty-five others had to be evacuated from the danger zone. Officials say efforts to fully extinguish the fire are expected to continue well into the day.
