Evergreen’s Ever Lunar Drops 50 Containers in Peruvian Waters

On August 1st, the Ever Lunar, a container ship operated by Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine, lost approximately 50 containers overboard while anchored in Callao Bay, Peru. The vessel reportedly began to roll heavily, leading to the containers at the stern toppling into the sea.
As a result of the incident, the Port of Callao was temporarily shut down, disrupting both cargo handling and vessel traffic. Terminal operators including DP World Callao and APM Terminals suspended their operations. Authorities issued maritime safety alerts, and vessel movements across the bay were paused.
According to Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defence (Indeci), none of the lost containers were carrying dangerous materials. The National Port Authority (APN) stated that recovery efforts are being coordinated by the Maritime Authority and will be carried out by professional salvage teams.
Two Peruvian patrol boats, Costa Sama and Río Chira, were dispatched to monitor the area, while tugboats Ram Vigo and Tiamat were stationed near the vessel to assist in cleanup operations. Evergreen confirmed that additional tug support had been arranged to help recover containers drifting in the bay.
An investigation is now underway to identify the cause of the incident.
This marks the second container-related mishap for Evergreen in less than a week. On July 29th, another vessel from the line, the Ever Feat, experienced a container stack collapse en route from Brazil to Uruguay, damaging an estimated 30 to 40 containers.
