Japanese shipping giant NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) has acquired full ownership of Kadmos Holding GmbH, a fast-growing German fintech company specializing in end-to-end digital salary payments for seafarers.

Kadmos offers innovative payroll solutions tailored to shipowners, management firms, and crews across the globe. According to Seanews , the acquisition aims to strengthen NYK’s digital finance strategy in the maritime sector.

NYK already operates MarCoPay, a financial services platform launched in the Philippines in 2019, which offers loans, insurance, and digital salary disbursement services to Filipino seafarers and their families. MarCoPay holds an electronic money issuer license from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, making it the only regulated digital salary provider of its kind in the country.

The acquisition of Kadmos will allow NYK to expand beyond the Filipino market and offer secure, seamless salary solutions to seafarers of all nationalities. Together, Kadmos and MarCoPay plan to deliver an integrated payment experience to seafarers worldwide while continuing to support the specific needs of Filipino crews.

Commenting on the deal, Kadmos CEO Sasha Makarovych said the partnership with NYK and collaboration with MarCoPay is an ideal match. “We believe the combination of MarCoPay’s local expertise in the Philippines and Kadmos’ global network will create the best-in-class salary payment solution for the maritime industry,” he added.

The move reflects NYK’s broader digitalization strategy and commitment to improving financial inclusion and well-being for seafarers across the globe.
