Dozens of cats discovered living on sailboat near Tacoma

An unusual rescue operation took place near Owen Beach in Tacoma, Washington, after police discovered more than 30 cats living on a sailboat. The Maritime Telegraph reported that the animals had apparently been on board for several months.

Police responded to a report about the boat on August 6. When officers went aboard, they found cats hiding throughout the vessel. The narrow spaces and many hiding places made the rescue difficult.

By Friday, rescuers had removed 31 cats and kittens and taken them to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. More cats were still believed to be hiding on the boat, so the operation continued.

Animal Control said the cats appeared relatively healthy, although some had fleas. Officials also found signs that someone had been providing them with food and water.

Police identified the boat’s registered owner but have not been able to contact him. It is still unclear how so many cats ended up on the sailboat or why they were left there.
