Toxic fugu fish could appear in the Black Sea

The invasive fugu fish could spread across the Black Sea as sea temperatures continue to rise. Ukraine’s State Environmental Inspectorate warns that warmer waters may help the species move into new areas, creating risks for fisheries, marine ecosystems and public safety, according to The Maritime Telegraph .

The silver-cheeked toadfish ( Lagocephalus sceleratus ) is native to the Indo-Pacific and reached the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Although it has not established a stable population near Ukraine, experts believe climate change could support its expansion across the Black Sea.

The species threatens commercial fishing by damaging nets and feeding on valuable fish, crustaceans and mollusks, reducing catches and causing economic losses.

The fish is also highly toxic. Its internal organs contain tetrodotoxin, a powerful natural poison that can cause paralysis, respiratory failure and death if eaten. Marine experts also warn people not to touch the fish because its strong jaws can cause serious injuries.
