Two tankers attacked near Strait of Hormuz

Two tankers were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz on July 20, raising new concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in one of the world's most important oil routes, The Maritime Telegraph reported.

The first incident involved the Malta-flagged product tanker Kavomaleas, managed by Greece's Dynacom Tankers. The vessel was hit by two projectiles northwest of Kumzar, causing a fire in the engine room. The crew could not bring the fire under control and abandoned the ship. Omani authorities later rescued all seafarers safely.

Several hours later, the Kuwaiti crude oil tanker Kaifan, owned by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company, reported a similar attack northeast of Limah. According to EOS Risk Group, the vessel was likely struck by a drone or missile. The impact also started an engine-room fire, forcing the crew to leave the ship. No injuries or pollution were reported.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed both incidents and urged vessels in the region to stay alert while investigations continue. Officials have not identified who was responsible for the attacks.

The latest incidents highlight growing security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route that carries about 20% of the world's oil supplies. Shipping companies continue to operate in the area under increased security measures and are urging crews to remain vigilant.
