French shipping company CMA CGM has officially christened CMA CGM Notre Dame, the largest containership ever registered under the French flag. The ceremony took place in Le Havre. The vessel is the first of ten LNG-powered mega containerships that will join the French registry by 2028.

Built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China, the ship is 399 metres long and can carry up to 24,000 TEU, placing it among the largest container vessels in the world.

The vessel runs on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and uses AI-supported voyage optimisation technology to improve fuel efficiency. According to CMA CGM, the combination of LNG propulsion and advanced systems helps reduce emissions compared with conventional containerships.

CMA CGM Notre Dame will serve the Asia–Europe trade route. The ship recently completed its maiden voyage from China to Europe through the Suez Canal. During its passage through the Red Sea, it sailed under the protection of a French Navy frigate participating in the EU’s Aspides maritime security mission.

Named after the famous Paris cathedral, the vessel was christened by Delphine Arnault in the presence of French officials and company representatives.

The new ship is part of CMA CGM’s fleet renewal programme, which supports the company’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The company also plans to hire 135 additional French seafarers to crew the ten new vessels.
