HD Hyundai is working on a new robotic hull maintenance system that could change the way ships are inspected and cleaned. According to The Maritime Telegraph, the company has joined forces with several technology and maritime partners to develop an automated solution for hull inspection, cleaning and performance monitoring.

The project includes HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Robotics, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, Avikus, KCC and TAS Global. Together, they aim to create a complete hull care platform that uses autonomous underwater robots and artificial intelligence.

Unlike traditional hull maintenance, which usually takes place at fixed intervals, the new system will continuously monitor a vessel’s hull condition. It will identify marine growth, suggest maintenance work and check the quality of cleaning results.

AI-powered underwater robots will play a key role in the project. They will inspect and clean ship hulls while collecting data that helps operators keep vessels in better condition and improve fuel efficiency.

Hull fouling is a major issue for shipping companies because it increases water resistance, fuel consumption and emissions. As environmental rules become stricter, shipowners are paying more attention to hull performance as a practical way to reduce operating costs.

HD Hyundai believes the new technology will help operators monitor hull conditions in real time, lower fuel expenses and support environmental compliance. If the system reaches the market, it could become one of the first solutions to automate the entire hull maintenance process, from inspection and cleaning to performance verification.
