UK maritime tech company Zelim has set a new benchmark in cruise safety after its ZOE platform became the first fully certified man-overboard detection system under ISO 21195:2020. The achievement was confirmed following independent validation, as reported by The Maritime Telegraph .

Lloyd’s Register issued the certification after 90 days of live trials onboard the cruise ship Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line. During testing, ZOE reached a 97% detection rate in simulated man-overboard events and kept false alarms low, averaging fewer than one per day. The system proved stable in real operational conditions at sea.

ISO 21195 defines the global standard for automated man-overboard detection on passenger ships. ZOE stands out as the first solution certified to detect both adults and children, even though child detection is not required by the standard. The platform uses computer vision and real-time video analytics with full 360-degree vessel coverage. Its AI model learned from more than 9.5 million maritime objects to improve accuracy and speed.

The certification strengthens confidence in AI-driven safety tools across the cruise industry, where operators must meet strict requirements under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010. Zelim now plans to expand ZOE deployment globally, with future use cases expected in defence and other high-risk maritime sectors.
