MSC crosses 1,000-ship mark as liner shipping leadership gap expands

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has pushed global liner shipping into new territory by becoming the first carrier to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels. The milestone followed the delivery of the 11,480-TEU container ship MSC Migsan from Zhoushan Changhong shipyard, The Maritime Telegraph reported, citing fleet data from Splash 247.
MSC now controls around 7.3 million TEU of capacity across its fleet, reinforcing a clear advantage over its closest rival, A.P. Moller- Maersk. Industry estimates indicate MSC’s tonnage base exceeds that competitor by roughly 57%, confirming a structural shift at the top of the liner hierarchy. Measured against peers, MSC’s capacity alone approaches the combined fleets of Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE), Evergreen, and HMM. This comparison illustrates how strongly the carrier has reshaped competitive positioning across global container trades in recent years.
Since 2020, MSC has expanded its fleet rapidly during the most profitable container shipping cycle on record. The company relied primarily on vessel additions rather than large takeover deals, building scale through steady organic growth while maintaining operational flexibility.
Established in Naples in 1970, MSC rose to the top position among liner operators in 2021. Surpassing the 1,000-vessel threshold further strengthens its influence over global fleet capacity trends and the competitive structure of container shipping.
