Japan has taken a major step toward autonomous shipping after authorities certified the country’s first RoRo ship for fully autonomous commercial navigation, according to The Maritime Telegraph. The milestone highlights Japan’s strategy to modernize coastal logistics and accelerate deployment of smart vessel technologies.

The Hokuren Maru No. 2, operated by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE), received approval following upgrades that integrated a sensor-based navigation platform capable of supporting automated voyage decisions. The vessel operates on a regular domestic route between Hokkaido and the Tokyo region, transporting trucks loaded with agricultural cargo.

During testing, the vessel demonstrated stable autonomous performance, including safe navigation in busy waters and reliable speed management. After completing verification procedures from ClassNK and passing inspection by Japan’s transport authorities in early 2026, the ship gained authorization for autonomous commercial service.

Japan expects autonomous vessels to help offset workforce shortages at sea, improve navigation safety, and strengthen the resilience of domestic supply chains. More than 50 industry partners support the initiative, contributing operational data and helping shape future international standards for autonomous shipping systems.
